Thank you to © Cherezoff from Dreamstime for the elephant visual.
The charity Tide~ global learning closed in January 2025 after 50 years providing a focus for teacher creativity. The teacher network Tide~ [Teachers in development education] evolved from Development Education Centre [Birmingham].
The Elephant Times Association [ETA] aims to make Tide~ ideas and resources freely available through an archive, and partnership with other organisations.
For us the visual represents the vortex of confusion, some would say indecision, in the final phase before Tide~ closed. And then an emerging of strong elephant – the ETA - seeking to engage contemporary education debate.
Robin Richardson, who wrote the original fable that inspired the idea of the 'Elephant Times' in 1984, has written a new fable for ETA ..........

The process of archiving also offers the opportunity to reflect on Tide~ experiences and core ideas … to consider what is relevant to current debates and concerns … and to invite others to contribute their own reflections.

Tide~ global learning was a teacher network that promoted the idea that young people have an entitlement to global learning. Strategically the core idea was about teachers and other education practitioners coming together to engage with global issues … and then the needs of learners in that context. The primary driver was the professional role of teachers and quality learning. Tide~ offered 'creative space' for work on curriculum development and learning approaches.

This archive represents the work of thousands of teachers and project leadership [on a voluntary basis] from teachers and others with education roles. The management and co-ordination of Tide~ was the responsibility of the Trusteeswho were elected from Membership.
The maintaining of an office, the Resources Shop, publications development, projects co-ordination and implementing strategy was the responsibility of a small energetic staff group.
The History in Brief outlines how Tide~ evolved since 1975.

'What is it about Tide~ and elephants' was produced at the end of 2020 as a bit of serious fun - to welcome 2021.
It was an opportunity to revisit the elephant jigsaw and share some thoughts.
It also helped set the scene for what was an attempt to regenerate the Tide~ network, that worked but only to a limited extent.
