Commonwealth - Seeking key questions

The ‘How do we know?’ questions, that evolved in the process of editing Elephant Times  2.4 articles, could be adapted as a framework for other Connecting Dialogue themes.

Discussions about what we hope learners will gain from a better understanding of the Commonwealth led to a focus on the question: How do we know?.

  • How do we avoid just creating a new 'single story'?
  • How do we prioritise enquiry learning, enabling learners to generate and then investigate their own questions?

See article: 'If we don't seek questions to ask?'  And supporting activity using the development compass rose.

If you are not familiar with the TED Talk by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, we recommend it.  She tells her story and warns that if we hear only a single story about a place, or issue, we risk a critical misunderstanding.

Articles in ET 2.4 addressing these questions demonstrate the scope. For example: - using W War 1 British Empire recruitment posters [History]; - Badminton: played in England, made around the world [PE]; - Colonial Legacy and its echoes in a technological world. [ICT]

The ET 2.4 supplement - Asks people from Birchfield community about their Commonwealth connections, how they see the Commonwealth and the Games.

How do we know ...

  • If we don't seek questions to ask?
  • Unless we reflect on what we are doing?
  • If we assume a single story? - seeking perspectives
  • If we don't question what seems to be going on?
  • If we don't remember? - eg past experiences
  • Unless we connect – then & now – here & there?
  • If we don't question our own assumptions?
  • Unless we ask? - for example the people involved.
